Utah Bans Conversion Therapy

Utah Bans Conversion Therapy for LGBTQ Kids

Conversion therapy is a health care practice that is utilized in hopes to try to change sexual orientation or gender identify (Whitehurst, 2020). There has been an increase of LGBTQ individuals who’ve attended conversion therapy and reported increased suicide thoughts and depression following the therapy sessions. The idea of eliminating conversion therapy lies within the mental health that diminishes with those who attend this form of therapy.

Utah, known for being a predominately Mormon state, has strict views opposing same-sex marriage and intimate relationships with same-sex partners; however, they urge their church members to be kind and considerate to those in the LGBTQ community – regardless of their differing views. The state has allowed health care practitioners to discuss a LGBTQ kids sexuality with them, if they have questions or concerns, but in no way, shape, or form, are allowed to try to change their sexual orientation or identity – even if the parents request them to do so.

In the United States, there are currently 19 states who have banned the practice of conversion therapy for LGBTQ kids, with Utah being the most recent. This is a huge step forward for LGBTQ individuals as Utah is known as one of the most conservative states with the most conservative views. Utah lawmakers and congressmen agree that the ban on this form of therapy will aid in the decrease of suicide attempts, as well as the decrease of suicide successes, as the LGBTQ kids are more likely to feel accepted if they aren’t being forced to attend these conversion therapies. Craig Hall, a Utah representative who initiated the sponsor of the bill, states that the bill “will simply save lives by prohibiting dangerous practices, while also protecting health care professionals”; although, the ruling may present issues during the 2020 legislative session.
